I may be deleting this journal Does anyone read me here on InsaneJournal who doesn't read me at Dreamwidth? I've been crossposting to here from Dreamwidth, but I don't know if it matters, other than to have a backup to my journal. Aaaand, my posting filters and yes, f-locks at dreamwidth still post over here as public. (!) Which is so not good, but could be fixable, if necessary. So, how about it? Anyone need this journal in order to read me? Oh, and btw, you can add the feed from my DW journal to your own LiveJournal f-list by subscribing to the feed called dw_dragonfly. |

Exciting Movie Trailer leads to shock and dismay! Iron Man 2 looks so incredible I had to check out the cast at IMDB and, clicking happily from one movie to another, discovered that Ray Stevenson is going to play Volstagg in Thor!! This is a minor bogglement 'cause on planet Taz Volstagg is the comic relief but I can roll with it, believe me, I can roll with it. What I cannot roll with is Renee Russo playing Frigga as both the mother of Thor and Loki! What the hell happened to the Storm Giants? And why the hell isn't Zachary Quinto playing Loki? |

This and that I am doing research for a story in a fandom I can’t announce until after the reveal, and have found myself reading actual academic literary criticism for the first time in a long time. Oh, fandom, you do a much better job at meta! I was really struck by how reaching and pompous some of this is, and thought about all the insightful, meaningful meta I read regularly in fandom. I wish I could point you to some examples of the ridiculous lit crit I’ve been reading, but – can’t. I’ll leave you to imagine it. ( Read more... )Comments are disabled here. Instarec: Collarkink meme fill for Peter gets hurt and Neal mother-hens Here I am with yet another White Collar rec. That kink meme at collarkink on LJ has produced a lot of excellent ficlets, and this is another one. The requestor asked for h/c where Peter gets hurt during a chase and Neal worries and mother-hens. In this Neal goes farther than mother-hen, imo, but it's emotionally honest and beautifully written. Another author I hope claims her story so I can read more of her stuff. http://community.livejournal.com/collarkink/516.html?thread=238084#t238084Rating is around PG. Gen. I am miffed. And YOU should be miffed likewise. Apparently a meme is going around asking one to bold and underline TV shows that one has seen 'all,' 'none' or 'some' of. The following shows are NOT ON IT: Wagon Train High Chaparral Maverick Bronco Lane Cheyenne Sugar Foot Rifle Man Have Gun Will Tavel Broken Arrow (!) Stoney Burke The Dakotas The Virginian Fury Cimmeron Strip Rawhide (Jeazus!) Here Come The Brides (Double Jeazus!) The Rebel Tombstone Territory Big Valley Bat Masterson Wyatt Earp The Wild Wild West Kolchak, the Night Stalker Night Heat Man From Uncle(!!!) Adventures in Paradise Hawaii Five O Hawaiian Eye 77 Sunset Strip Combat 21 Jump Street This foolishness comes courtesy of Cyberducks who pointed out that Highlander and The Rockford Files were not on it either. |

Yes, it's that birthday tomorrow And most poetry fails one at this point, but Yeats does come through, so (with apologies):
THAT is no country for old men. The young In one another's arms, birds in the trees - Those dying generations - at their song, The salmon-falls, the mackerel-crowded seas, Fish, flesh, or fowl, commend all summer long Whatever is begotten, born, and dies. Caught in that sensual music all neglect Monuments of unageing intellect.
An aged (fan) is but a paltry thing, A tattered coat upon a stick, unless Soul clap its hands and sing, and louder sing For every tatter in its mortal dress, Nor is there singing school but studying Monuments of its own magnificence; And therefore I have sailed the seas and come To the holy city of Byzantium.
O sages standing in God's holy fire As in the gold mosaic of a wall, Come from the holy fire, perne in a gyre, And be the singing-masters of my soul. Consume my heart away; sick with desire And fastened to a dying animal It knows not what it is; and gather me Into the artifice of eternity.
Once out of nature I shall never take My bodily form from any natural thing, But such a form as Grecian goldsmiths make Of hammered gold and gold enamelling To keep a drowsy Emperor awake; Or set upon a golden bough to sing To lords and ladies of Byzantium Of what is past, or passing, or to come.
...

How do you break a spell? Back in the day I played a lot of RPGs (not the online kind, the kind with actual dice and people sitting looking at each other) and did worldbuilding with things like magic systems. So mara's request for ideas on how to break a spell in a story, was fun for me. What was really fun was seeing everyone else's ideas, and noticing how much overlap we have. her post at Dreamwidthher post at LiveJournalComments are disabled here. stuck in a snowbank Yep, that was me.
So today, the day after the snowstorm, it is sunny and beautiful but cold in the single digits. I ventured out, on my way to a committee meeting. The roads are clear, but with a uniform sheet of packed snow frosting everything. Traffic is light and slow. Daydreaming, I almost missed a left turn, and when I realized, I hit the brakes a little too hard. I fishtailed into some piled up snow left by the snowplow. My all wheel drive, for once, was not sufficient to get me out of what I'd got myself into. And my cell phone was dead. Again. Last winter, when I ran out of gas on the freeway, my phone was also dead. No love. At least this time I had the sense to be wearing long underwear. After that last adventure I promised myself I would never again neglect the cuddleduds, and I have kept that promise. Now if I could just conquer keeping my phone charged.
Anyway, I couldn't push the car out of the snowbank, either. I was in a residential neighborhood. Once again I was saved by the kindness of strangers. A woman stopped and let me use her cell phone to call Mom. I suggested she bring a shovel and her own cell, so I could call AAA if the shovel didn't work. A man stopped, examined my situation and declared that he could dig me out if he had a shovel. He had just come from an estate sale where he had seriously considered buying a snow shovel he saw. He was annoyed he hadn't done it. The woman left, but he waited around, I think for Mom to arrive with a shovel. Then he saw a guy snowblowing his drive a few houses down and asked the man to borrow a shovel. He dug me out before Mom even got there. Of course, she had to drive very slowly, too, and took a long time.
So far as I can tell, there's no harm to the car. I didn't hit anything; I think it was sidewalk under me, eventually. But I owe a new karmic debt to the universe for help being stuck in the snow. I helped someone else who had run out of gas and I figure that evened the old score *g* but now I need to help someone stuck in the snow.
ETA: Well, that didn't take long. I was cleaning the fireplace and took out a bucket of ashes to pour on the driveway, and the mailman's truck had slid off our hill and kind of into the neighbor's drive. He couldn't get from the drive onto the hill. I and two more passersby pushed him straight out onto the street where he could get traction to turn and continue up.

Subscribe to me on LiveJournal By the way, thanks to china_shop, the RSS feed from my Dreamwidth account is available at LiveJournal, called dw_dragonfly. You can read me there without making a special trip over here, if you want to. I assume it only shows public posts, so I can't "give you access" on the feed, but, you know, I can still be on your f-list. *g* Comments are disabled here. Please comment in my Dreamwidth journal. A post that's not about White Collar Are you guys filtering my White Collar posts yet? *g* I wouldn't blame you. I do tag them.
I woke up this morning to seventeen inches of new snow on everything. Half again as much as the highest estimate the weather service had. Aaaand, it's supposed to keep falling off and on all day. O.O
I'm glad we pay someone to come dig out the drive, but I still had to shovel a path for the mailman. It is SO pretty, I can't tell you. Maybe I'll snap some shots of the backyard and post them here. Does Dreamwidth have photo hosting yet?
I've been on the Yuletide pinch hit list for a few years now, and here I am again in my usual state of mourning. I only try to claim pinch hits when I look at them and think, Wow, that story has always been there in me -- I could write that so easily. It's surprising how often, with the thousands of fandoms out there, that one of those comes along. Something where the requester and I see so eye to eye on something. The thing is, I see that, I love this person and their request, I try for it -- and I don't get it. It hurts, and I spend a day or so in mourning.
And, no, I haven't even started my own Yuletide story yet. Yes, I am an idiot.
ETA: I just stuck a yardstick in my driveway. Two feet. Since yesterday. It's rather glorious, really.
